Robert Petersen Family – Robert (1852-1939) and spouses Karen Petersen (born Pedersen) (1858-1888), Ane Petersen (born Pedersen) (1850-1923)
Robert Petersen was born 22 May 1852 in Frejlev, in the southeast corner of the island of Lolland, Denmark. He was named Rasmus Pedersen at birth by his parents Peder Olsen and Gjertrud Rasmusdatter. Like his father before him, Rasmus became a blacksmith.
Rasmus married Karen Pedersen at Nysted on the south coast of the island of Lolland, Denmark, on 14 April 1880. The couple immediately immigrated to the United States. They are recorded in the 1880 Census of the United States living in Racine, Wisconsin, USA with Karen’s brother Hans (a blacksmith) and his wife Margrethe (“Maggie”). Upon arrival in the United States, Rasmus Pedersen became known as Robert Petersen.
Karen Pedersen was born 6 March 1858 in Vantore, in the southeast corner of the island of Lolland, Denmark. Her parents were Peder Hansen and Maren Rasmusdatter.
Robert and Karen’s first two children were born in Racine, Wisconsin: Gertrude in October 1881 and Marie in February 1883. By December 1884, when third daughter Louisa Petra was born, the family had moved to the newly established town of Nysted, Howard County, Nebraska, USA. Robert served the new community as its first blacksmith. A fourth daughter, Clara Christine, was born in October 1886.
Karen died at the age of 30 on 4 September 1888. According to the death notice in the Dannebrog Sentinel newspaper, she had experienced “many weeks of intense suffering.”

At the time of Karen’s death the family was living on a farm on Munson Creek (Dannevirke township, Howard County, Nebraska, near the town of Elba). This left Robert to work the farm and care for four daughters, aged 7, 5, 4, and 2.
In about 1897, Robert married Ane Petersen, probably in Howard County, Nebraska, USA. Ane Pedersen was born 5 June 1850 in Frejlev, on the island of Lolland, Denmark. Her parents were Peder Olsen and Bodil Rasmusdatter. She came to Nebraska in 1883. Her brother, Ole, also immigrated from Denmark to Nebraska.
In 1909, Robert and Ane moved from Nebraska to Waupaca, Wisconsin, USA. Robert’s parents, three brothers and a sister had all settled in Waupaca between about 1879 and 1882.
Ane passed away in Waupaca on 14 September 1923. She was 73. Robert lived to the age of 86, passing away in Waupaca on 14 January 1939. They are both buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Dannebrog, Howard County, Nebraska.
The man at left in the front row of this photo is identified as Robert Petersen. The woman peeking out from behind him may be his daughter Marie. Behind the other man are Robert’s daughters Clara and Gertrude Petersen. Circa 1934
