John W. and Eliza Davies Family

Eliza Davies, formerly Jones, and John Walter Davies, ca 1900

Eliza Jane Jones was born 27 November 1854 in Oldbury, England (near Birmingham in the West Midlands). Her parents were John R Jones and Ann Jones, formerly Poole. Eliza emigrated with her family to Waushara County, Wisconsin from England’s industrial “black country” in 1864.

Eliza died 14 June 1904, at the age of 49.

John Walter Davies was born 5 October 1858, in Cilycwm, Carmarthenshire, Wales. His parents were Rees Davies and his wife Catherine.

In 1866, John emigrated from his home in Wales to live in Waushara County, Wisconsin. His father, Rees, was already in Wisconsin, having arrived sometime between 1853 and 1857.

John died 14 November 1930, at the age of 92.

On the back of this photo, an unknown informant (possibly Wilma Shanklin, formerly Radloff) has written “the Davies brothers and their wives. Taken in Pennsylvania.” John W and Eliza Davies are at center. Two siblings of JW Davies immigrated from their home in Wales to settle in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, a coal mining area. I think the other couples may be, at left, sister Mary Ann Jones, nee Davies, and her husband Morgan. The right-hand couple may be Margaret Davies, nee Evans, and brother Daniel R Davies. I welcome any additional information about the people in this photograph.

The Davies Family: The Ten Children of JW and Eliza Davies

I encourage any of the descendants of the children of JW and Eliza Davies to work with me to record and remember their lives on Wikitree.com, a collaborative (or single) family tree. My contact information is here.

From the many photos of them taken together, the Davies children appear to have been fond of one another and to have enjoyed each other’s company. The memories of many reunions and gatherings are shown by the photos kept by Ethel and handed down to her descendants.

This studio portrait from about 1910 shows nine of the ten children of JW and Eliza Davies. The daughters are, left to right, Lillie, Ethel, Edith, Alice, and Laura. The sons are, left to right, Albert, Ward, Frank, and Edwin.

The Davies sisters are shown here circa 1915, left to right, Edith, Ethel, Alice, Lillie, and Laura.

The Davies sisters and their husbands in the 1920s, left to right, the sisters Ethel, Edith, Lillie, Laura, and Alice; and the husbands, left to right, Frank Radloff, Andrew Nelson, Albert Yohn, Alton Freeman, and Frank Washatko.

Lillian Ann (“Lillie”) Yohn, nee Davies (1875-1972)

Lillie was born on the family farm in the Town of Rose, just west of modern day Wild Rose, in Waushara County, Wisconsin, on 20 June 1875.

Lillie married Albert Yohn on 20 July 1904 in Almond, Portage County, Wisconsin.

They farmed for many years in the town of Rose, until Albert’s death in 1955. The couple had two children: Ruth Eliza (1905-2001) and Leslie Albert (1908-1953).

Winfield Oakley Davies (1877-1957)

Winfield was born in the Town of Rose, Waushara County, Wisconsin on 8 July 1877.

He married neighbor Edna Louisa Jenks on 19 July 1906.

By 1910, Winfield and Edna were farming and raising a family in Washburn County, Wisconsin — first at Trego and later at Shell Lake. Winfield and Edna had four children: Carrol Eliza (1906-2006), Cecilie Ione (1908-1941), Raymond (“Ray”) Leland (1910-1988), and Marie Evelyn (1912-1995).

Edna died in 1955; Winfield in 1957.

I have several photographs that I think may be the children of Winfield and Edna Davies, but I am not certain of it. I welcome the assistance of any of their descendants who may be able to help with identifying the children in the photos.

Edwin Charles Davies (1879-1972)

Edwin was born in the Town of Rose on 12 March 1879. Unlike most of his siblings, Edwin did not live a farming life. By his 20s, he was working as a stone mason, a trade he pursued for the rest of his working life.

He married Bessie Barstow in Minnesota on 5 July 1913. The couple lived in Clintonville, Waupaca County, Wisconsin for some time before moving to Waukegan, Illinois. Edwin and Bessie had one daughter, Charlotte Louise (1914-1994). Edwin died 22 April 1972, in Waukegan. Bessie survived him until 1988.

Albert Reese Davies (1881-1969)

Albert was born 10 March 1881 in the Town of Rose. He married Helena (“Lena”) Dernbach 12 March 1907. The couple lived and farmed in the Town of Rose, Waushara County, very near to the farm of his Albert’s father, JW Davies.

Albert and Lena had a daughter, Emily (1908-2005) and a son, Bernard Charles (1911-2000).

Lena died in 1942, and Albert survived her until 1969.

Jacob Franklin (“Frank”) Davies (1883-1967)

Jacob Franklin Davies, who preferred to be known as Frank, was born in the Town of Rose, on 9 February 1883.

Like brother Edwin, Frank steered away from farming and into the building trades, working for many years as a carpenter. Frank moved out west, first to Montana, where he married Grace B. Pickering.

Frank, Grace, and Gladys, her daughter by a previous marriage, settled in Los Angeles, California. Frank died there in 1967, and Grace survived him until 1978.

Edith Jessie Nelson, nee Davies (1888-1970)

Edith Jessie Davies was born 19 August 1888, in the Town of Rose. She was 15 years old when her mother died in 1904. She married Andrew Nelson on 17 March 1915, and the couple lived and farmed in the Town of Rose.

Edith and Andrew had two daughters: Byrdine M. (1917-1997) and Crystel W. (1919-2015).

Andrew passed away in February 1970 and Edith just weeks later in April 1970.

Alice Edna Dernbach, nee Davies (also known as Washatko) (1890-1978)

Alice Edna Davies was born in the Town of Rose on 26 November 1890. She was 13 years old when her mother died in 1904.

Alice married Frank Washatko, in Plainfield, Waushara County, on 30 July 1919. The couple had one son, Clifford (1922-2004).

Frank died in 1951. After Lillie’s husband, Albert Yohn, died in 1955, the sisters lived together in Almond, Portage County, until Lillie passed away in 1972.

At age 81, on 17 May 1972, Alice married widow Henry Dernbach. Henry’s sister had been Albert Davies’s wife, Lena. Alice died on 17 April 1978, and Henry survived her until 1981.

Ward Henry Davies (1893-1979)

Ward Henry Davies was born 25 April 1893, in the Town of Rose. He was 11 years old when his mother died in 1904. Ward married Louise Fichter on 12 August 1924.

The couple farmed, first in the Town of Rose, and later in Wautoma.

Ward passed away in November 1979, and Louise in June of the next year, 1980.

Laura Estelle Freeman, nee Davies (1897-1989)

Laura Estelle Davies was born 7 March 1897, in the Town of Rose. She was 7 years old when her mother died in 1904. Laura married Alton M. Freeman on 11 June 1927, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Alton worked in Milwaukee as a heating and ventilation engineer.

Alton died in Milwaukee on 6 March 1975. Laura moved back north, and passed away in Wisconsin Rapids, Wood County, Wisconsin, on 27 September 1989.
